I have had this issue since lighting up mediacom back in July of this year.
Latencies are all over the place, speeds inconsistent during peak hours. I am paying for 100mb, and usually only get about 5 down and 10 up.
Right now at 930P CST I am getting these pings:
Pinging google.com [173.194.46.69] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 173.194.46.69: bytes=32 time=94ms TTL=54
Reply from 173.194.46.69: bytes=32 time=104ms TTL=54
Reply from 173.194.46.69: bytes=32 time=201ms TTL=54
Reply from 173.194.46.69: bytes=32 time=173ms TTL=54
That is about on par with how it normally looks.
Attached are my signal levels that look good. I play some latency intensive games, and every night it's just sad. Pings are from 50-200ms.
It's so bad I set up a script to email me if I get 20 pings in a row under 60ms, so I know I can come on and attempt to play. It's been like this since signing up back in July. When I get days off I get on and play, and everything is a-ok. I get about 120mb down, and 20mb up, and latencies to google are about 20ms. I also have a server in Chicago, and downtown Minneapolis I can run pings to, which are about 20ms> during the day, but once 4P hits, there is no chance of using the internet. I have also checked with my neighbors, they also have the same issue.
I was told they're going to splice the area, and provide more bandwidth, and that was a few weeks ago, maybe a month or two. I can't imagine with the frost coming they'll be able to do it come winter. So I am stuck doing this until spring.
Honestly, if I could get a consistent latency, 10mb down and 10mb up would be fine at night. I hate paying $75 a month and not being able to use the internet when I want. I would attempt Century Link, but I don't imagine they're any better. It's possible I will get desperate come winter though.
I have been in talks with Chad, who has been very helpful, but MediaCom isn't helping at all. I've also opened a ticket with the office here, who sent out a tech, who called prior to the appointment, and said there's nothing he can do to fix it so he didn't bother coming out.
I feel like a crazy person having to post a complaint about this, because this is the stuff I get with what I do for work now (network admin). It is just frustrating knowing what the issue is (oversubscribed), and not being able to do anything about it, and paying for a service I cannot get 50% of the time. As much as people gripe about comcast, when I had that, it was amazing, even living in a congested area like uptown and Brooklyn Park. I had it for about 7 years, and I never once had latency/bandwidth issues.
