I've been having this problem for a while now where my speeds will randomly go from 50 down to between 2 and 10 down. Every time I chat with mediacom on twitter they say it's an SNR issue. I had a tech out a while back to check it out and after a few tests he blamed it on me living in an old house that's not grounded properly and left. The problem occurs intermittently. It'll be fine for a couple of weeks then all of a sudden my modem is filled with errors and it'll be slow again, then finally corrects itself, but sometimes not for several hours.
Recently I've mentioned this to a few people who sort of no electrical and they said the tech's explanation sounded odd. This prompted me to make a post on the electricians subreddit asking about it. Most of the responses said it's most likely not an electrical issue.
My question is, what else could this be? Do I need a new modem? Is there something screwed up with the coax coming to the house? I'd really like to get this figured out.
