I purchased an Arris TG862G gateway for my Mediacom internet service in northern Illinois. FW: TS070593_060313_MODEL_862_GW. Purchased thsi because the rented units from Mediacom kept having issues and had to be replaced. I've been running my own modem for a few months, after I'd set it up with some basic changes when I initially set it up (resetting the default PW, disabling wifi, setting up bridge). Hadn't bothered to log into it again, until last night.
Realized I had to log in with the default password. Then found all other settings I'd originally changed were reset to defaults. I figured maybe Mediacom had pushed a firmware at some point and things got reset. So, I changed a bunch of settings again and saved. Restarted it, and everything reverted to defaults again. Basically, any power off or restart of the gateway resets everything to factory defaults. Tested various mechanisms to try and get changes to stick - no luck.
Did a little digging on the net and found some other users reporting similar issues, and blaming it on a firmware bug. Couldn't find anything directly related to this firmware, or 100% confirmed. Realized I cannot update the firmware directly myself, and am supposed to be reliant on my carrier (Mediacom) to update the firmware to whatever they support.
So, I contacted Mediacom chat, explained my situation, and was told they don't update customer owned equipment. So at this point, I have no options to even tell if a firmware update will fix this problem. I asked to see the policy or to be transferred to a supervisor/manager, and was just given a phone support number to call.
Before I call, I figured I could get he best information from this forum, based on what I've read, and seeing MediacomChad responding a lot to threads here.
1. Can I get confirmation on Mediacom's policy for updating customer modems?
2. Will Mediacom push new firmware if requested?
3. Does this issue ring a bell with anyone, and is anyone aware of a fix?
4. Do I have any options for updating the firmware myself?
Thanks in advance. I'll keep an eye out for responses.
