I have been fighting with Mediacom cable modem issues that are not getting any better despite having worked with tech support at least 4 times now. My current configuration of modem -> router -> rest of network has been setup for several years but starting last friday I frequently lose connection. When this started I had their Thomson modem but over the weekend purchased an Arris SB6183 and had it provisioned successfully. Sometimes rebooting both the router and the modem will be successful but many times not. It was up for 12 ish hours earlier today, but now has been up and down almost hourly, which brings me to this:
The DHCP lease time that is being issued by mediacom is 3600 seconds (60 minutes!), which means that DHCP renewal begins at 30 minutes. If everyone is being given 60 minute lease times, this might explain why my logs are showing that I frequently get no response from the DHCP server when trying to initiate or renew a lease... the DHCP servers are overloaded servicing these insane lease times often resulting in no IP and consequently no connection.
For anyone interested, the support I've talked to have said that my signal looks excellent, speed is good (100/10) and they can find no problems on their end.
Anyone know why the DHCP lease time would be so short and why this is has just started? (my DHCP log shows my previous lease at 21 days before this mess started last week).
If I can't get through to a support staff that can find something amiss how do I get this corrected? 1 automated call and 2 live calls just in the last few hours... frustrated...
