I bought a refurbished Motorola SB6180, an 8x4 DOCSIS 3 unit for under $33 with free shipping. It came in 3 days. It came in a heat sealed plastic wrap,with clear plastic over the facelplate, a new power supply and ethernet cable. It powered right up and was quickly provisioned after a post on the Mediacom support forum.
They have several other models available, including some combination modem/router gateways.
I found them by searching DOCSIS 3 on the web site. If you are looking to upgrade from a v2 modem or want to eliminate the rental charges, you should consider them or one of the many other sources.
