A few months ago I bought a few of the cheap SDR USB sticks and a good outside antenna for the purpose of hobby listening. As most people who run these cheap devices I ran into quite a bit of interference. I know the computer was adding some noise but there was still quite a bit of interference coming from somewhere else. I could never figure it out until today.
This morning I found quite a bit of interference in the upper HF and lower VHF bands where listening was impossible. Then I heard some strange audio just above the 2 meter band on 149.75MHz. It was very clear but not very strong. I was listening to the audio of CATV 18, which is QVC on our system. Sure enough, scanning other channels produced similar results. 137.75MHz (actually 137.7625) tuned in CATV 16 which just shows Mediacom advertisements & tunes in the local Knox K99.3 radio station and increase in noise in the video portion in the same band.
I have a handheld spectrum analyzer, set it the VHF band and followed the cable outside to the drop splitter but nothing out of the ordinary was seen. I checked all connectors, too. I'm not having any issues with the Internet or TV, either. I'm wondering if our feed line is leaking the signal. We've had most of the RG6 replaced twice already since we moved in this house in 2008 including the drop, not saying it's bad because we do have lots of squirrels but I would think that if the signal was leaking in our coax we would have some sort of signal issues which I haven't seen.
What is the protocol on handling this?
